Architecture with History

The history of laMercedes dates back to the 1950s, when Robert Terradas designed the main complex of the former factory for the Empresa Nacional de Motores de Aviación (Enmasa), making it one of the most prominent examples of rationalist architecture in Catalonia.

Completed in 1957 and expanded in the 1970s, this industrial legacy is preserved today as an essential part of laMercedes.

The project takes its name from the historic Mercedes-Benz factory, which for decades was a significant center of economic activity for the neighborhood until its closure in 2007. Today, this legacy is reinterpreted, maintaining key elements of its original architecture and reclaiming its role as a driver of urban activity and transformation.

The Retrofit Revolution

The concept of retrofit (renovation or adaptation of existing buildings) is one of the pillars of laMercedes’ transformation.

Instead of erasing its valuable heritage, the project aims to recycle and preserve its structures, creating a modern environment that respects and honors its history.

The restoration of emblematic buildings, such as the 1960s paint shop and the 1970s office building, exemplifies this integration of old and new.

The main building, converted into a central green plaza, becomes an open and accessible space throughout the year, acting as a meeting point in the neighborhood.
